Having graduated in Optometry from the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1976, I moved to Cairns in North Queensland and started work for a local well established Optometrist. In 1984 I decided to open my own business and added a second practice in 1986.

 

Continuing education was always part of my early business plans before it ever became a prerequisite for Optometric registration. I embraced Behavioural Optometry, specialising in children with learning/reading disability.

I also developed a speciality in difficult contact lens fittings including paediatric aphakia (babies who have had their cataracts removed and require a rigid lens fitting),post corneal graft, keratoconus and Orthokeratology.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority recognised me as a Certified Optometrist and I contribute to pilot Aviation medicals by conducting their eye exams. Likewise the Australian Maritime Safety Authority refers potential skippers and coxswains for specialised colour vision testing and assessment.

 

As a Colourblind Sight Centre practitioner, I assess colourblind patients and prescribe the appropriate colour correcting filter.

In 2008, I completed the Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics and have since developed an extensive referral network with local GPs and pharmacists for the treatment of eye disease.

Throughout my business career, I have subscribed to the adage of "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind" and pursued the sports of Triathlon and Surf Lifesaving. In Surf Lifesaving, my highest achievement was in 2007 when I was crowned champion North Australian Lifesaver at the North Aussie titles.
